OVERBELT MAGNETIC SEPARATORS

Permanent magnet overbelt separators are machines designed for the automatic and continuous extraction of ferrous contaminants from various material flows (plastic, glass, aggregates, etc.).

Their operating principle is based on the magnetic attraction generated by a high-intensity permanent core, positioned either transversely or longitudinally with respect to the underlying conveying system, capable of capturing and diverting ferrous contaminants contained within the processed material.

These separators are widely used in waste treatment plants (MSW, RDF, WEEE, ferrous scrap), in material recovery and recycling, in the glass industry, in aggregate production, and in the mining and cement sectors.

They are used both in primary and secondary positions, for the protection of downstream machinery (such as shredders and mills) or for the valorization of recovered materials.

DETAILS ABOUT BELT SEPARATORS

The core component of the permanent magnet overbelt separator is a high-intensity permanent magnet, around which the entire system is developed.

Two rollers (one driven and one idler) are positioned at the ends of a frame connected to the magnetic body, ensuring stability and precision during operation. A high-strength rubber belt is tensioned over the rollers and completely wraps the magnetic core.

The rotation of the head roller, driven by a gear motor, sets the belt in motion, enabling continuous transport and discharge of ferrous materials attracted by the magnetic field.

All rotating parts are protected by non-magnetic stainless steel casings, designed to ensure maximum operational safety.

The separator is installed in suspension above a conveyor belt (alternatively, also above a vibrating feeder, etc.), either at the material drop point or along the straight section.

The magnetic field generated by the permanent core intercepts ferrous metals present in the material flow, attracting them to the moving belt that carries them towards the discharge area.

Once beyond the magnetic influence zone, the metals are released by gravity into a dedicated discharge point, thus separating from the rest of the material.

The process takes place continuously, without interruptions and without the need for manual intervention.

There are two alternative types of permanent magnets that generate fields of different intensity.

Depending on the factors listed above, the following can be employed:

Ferrite magnets

They offer greater field depth compared to neodymium, allowing effective operation even at significant distances from the conveyor belt surface.

For this reason, they are particularly suitable in applications where the ferrous material to be separated does not require high attraction force, such as in multimaterial treatment plants.

The technical-economic performance of these magnets is superior beyond a certain operating distance compared to neodymium, as their magnetic decay is much less pronounced. This makes them the preferred choice in many practical cases.

Neodymium magnets

They are capable of generating extremely intense magnetic fields concentrated near the active surface, making them ideal for capturing small ferrous contaminants or weakly magnetic particles.

They offer excellent performance at short distances from the belt and are used when very high separation efficiency is required. A typical example is wired glass, where the ratio between metallic mass and the glass containing it is highly unbalanced (over 1:50), and extreme magnetic performance is needed to ensure effective extraction.

Their use is particularly suitable in sectors where total metal removal is critical, such as in fine fraction treatment, recycling of high-value materials, or protecting sensitive equipment. However, at greater operating distances, their rapid field decay reduces effectiveness compared to ferrite, also with an impact on economic efficiency.

  • Available in different sizes and configurations: these separators are available in a wide range of sizes, with magnetic plates of different dimensions depending on the application. The plate size directly affects magnetic performance, determining the separator’s operating distance.
  • ATEX Zone 22 certified version: for use in environments with a potentially explosive atmosphere due to the occasional presence of combustible dust, the separator can be supplied with certification compliant with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, specific for Zone 22.
  • Continuous and automatic operation: extraction takes place via an independent motorized belt that transports ferrous material out of the main flow without interrupting the production process.
  • No energy consumption for the magnetic field: the use of permanent magnets eliminates the need for electrical power to generate the magnetic field, reducing operating costs.
  • Low maintenance: overbelt separators are designed to work in harsh conditions with minimal routine maintenance requirements. It is sufficient to periodically check bearing lubrication and proper belt tension to ensure optimal operation.
  • Strength and reliability: built to operate in heavy-duty environments, they provide long-lasting performance even in dusty conditions or with abrasive materials.
