STAINLESS STEEL SEPARATOR
Stainless steel separators are machines designed to recover metal fractions with weak magnetic response, such as stainless steel, which escape traditional separation systems.
The system is structurally similar to a compact conveyor belt, equipped with two rollers (one idler and one motorized) and a continuous belt. The motorized head roller is fully magnetic, with very dense polarity and a magnetic field greater than 1 tesla. This configuration makes it possible to generate attractive forces sufficient to retain even non-ferrous metals with residual magnetic permeability.
Easy to integrate into existing lines, they represent an effective solution to improve the quality of recovered fractions and increase plant efficiency, especially in the separation of stainless steel from mixed flows.
STAINLESS STEEL SEPARATORS DETAILS
How are they structured?
The stainless steel separator is built like a compact conveyor belt, designed to retain weakly magnetic materials such as stainless steel.
The structure is solid yet compact, made of steel, and designed to be easily integrated into existing plants. The belt is supported by two main rollers: one idler roller at the rear and one motorized roller at the front.
The latter is also the core of the system: a high-intensity magnetic roller with very dense polarity, capable of generating a field greater than 10,000 Gauss.
The belt movement is driven by a motor sized according to the required width and throughput, ensuring an ideal advancing speed for separation. At the end of the belt there is an adjustable splitter, allowing precise definition of the separation line between materials retained by the magnetic field and those continuing along their natural trajectory.
How does a stainless steel separators work?
The operation of the stainless steel separator is based on the interaction between a high-intensity magnetic field and metals with a weak magnetic response.
The material is evenly fed onto the belt by a vibrating feeder, which distributes it across the full working width of the conveyor.
When approaching the magnetic roller, the materials are subjected to an intense magnetic field with very dense polarity, whose gradient is particularly high near the roller surface.
This field is capable of attracting and retaining:
- Ferrous and strongly magnetic metals: they fully follow the curvature of the roller;
- Weakly magnetic metals: such as certain types of stainless steel which, although normally not attracted by a magnetic field, can acquire magnetic properties after mechanical processing, such as plastic deformation, crushing, or fragmentation (volume reduction), where strong heating occurs.
Such processing modifies the crystalline structure of stainless steel (typically austenitic), inducing portions of martensitic structure, which is magnetically sensitive.
It is precisely this microstructural variation that enables the magnetic stainless steel separator to exert a sufficient force to deviate the trajectory of processed stainless fragments.
During the discharge phase from the belt, materials attracted by the magnetic field are held longer on the roller and fall close to its rotation point. Non-magnetic materials, on the other hand, follow a ballistic trajectory and are expelled further away.
An adjustable splitter allows precise calibration of the separation line between the two fractions. In the presence of ferrous materials mixed with stainless steel, the installation of a ferrous separator upstream is recommended, in order to remove the strongly magnetic fraction before it interferes with stainless steel separation.
Available types and sizes.
They are available in different working widths, configured according to the throughput of the material to be processed and the type of line in which they must be installed.
The belt width determines the hourly capacity and is defined during the design phase, taking into account particle size, density, and flow volume.
To ensure maximum separation efficiency, feeding by means of a vibrating table, placed upstream of the separator, is strongly recommended.
This system makes it possible to:
- distribute the material evenly over the entire working width of the belt;
- avoid accumulations and overlaps that would compromise the effectiveness of the magnetic field;
- improve selectivity between the stainless steel fraction and the non-magnetic fraction.
A low speed allows weakly magnetic material to remain longer in the area of influence of the field, increasing the likelihood of deviation and correct separation.
Thanks to its compact and modular structure, the stainless steel separator — or magnetic stainless steel separator — can be easily adapted to both new lines and existing plants, with minimal impact on layout and footprint.
Main Features.
- Recovery of stainless steel otherwise non-separable: allows the separation of weakly magnetic materials, such as processed stainless steels, which escape normal deferrization systems. The stainless steel separator ensures effective extraction even from complex flows.
- Increased plant profitability: improves the quality of recovered fractions, reduces waste, and enables the economic valorization of valuable materials. With a magnetic stainless steel separator, even fine fractions can be recovered more efficiently.
- High separation efficiency: the high intensity of the magnetic field (>10,000 Gauss) and the dense polarity alternation ensure excellent selectivity even on small particles.
- Continuous and reliable operation: ideal for high-throughput plants, thanks to the robustness of the structure and the use of permanent magnets that require no electrical power.
- Low maintenance: no magnetic components subject to wear or decay, no cooling system required. Both stainless steel separators and magnetic stainless steel separators guarantee long service life.
- Maximum operational flexibility: available in various widths and configurations, adaptable to throughput and specific customer requirements.
- Possibility of combination with ferrous separators: to obtain a purer stainless steel fraction, a ferrous separator can be installed upstream, further improving process effectiveness.
